Taking a Look Back

Emmy AwardWe were recently notified that we were selected for a Technology and Engineering Emmy Award for Secure and Accelerated File Transfer. I have to say, I never expected this when John Tkaczewski and I started creating FTP software almost 15 years ago. Winning this award validates years of work we put into this software, and is a representation of our entire team throughout the years. Many people are still with us, some are not, but all of them contributed to this achievement. I thought this would be a good time to reflect a bit on how FileCatalyst evolved through the years, from simple command line tool, to achieving 10 Gbps, to empowering the movement of the file transfer for the Sochi games for NBC, to winning an Emmy Award.

Unlimi-Tech was started back in 2000 with the goal of making FTP easier to deploy within an organization. As the products evolved, it became increasingly apparent the file sizes our customers were transferring were growing rapidly and so was the available bandwidth. We started to get questions about why our software wasn't able to transfer at the full speed of a customer’s network. We didn't have a good answer.

In early 2004, we started investigating ways to move files faster knowing this problem would only continue to grow. This was when we built the first generation of FileCatalyst, which at the time was a simple command line tool to send files at full line speed. A year later, we had accumulated a significant number of customers in the media and broadcast space, without any targeted marketing. With the apparent need in the media space, we took the technology to NAB in 2006 and began the journey in the media and broadcast industry. The product evolved, completely customer driven, to incorporate automation, workflow, mobile applications, and many other integration tools, and continues to evolve.

Since first attending NAB in 2006, we have been to every NAB and IBC show and have spread our reach even further to shows like BVE, Broadcast Asia, and Broadcast India. We have amassed hundreds of customers in media and broadcast and have extended the reach of the technology through a large network of resellers and ISV integration partners. Today we have amassed an ecosystem of close to 50 ISV integrations in media and broadcast alone. We have customers like NBC, Samsung, and CTV, and have been used for major events like the Olympics and World Cup. We are integrated with major solutions like Telestream, Harmonic, Vizrt, EMC, and TMD.

Our breadth of penetration into the broadcast industry is what garnered us this recognition. We helped pioneer the accelerated file transfer market and we will continue to lead the way moving forward. Whether you’ve been using FileCatalyst from the beginning, just recently installed it, or follow our updates and announcements, we appreciate and thank you for your support.
